The idea of pre-downloading map tiles seems like a reasonable choice when planning a trip, but caching them manually by scrolling the trip while zoomed in close seems a bit odd too. But traffic is only one aspect of a full feature mapping and driving app. I realize that in town, traffic updates are more important. As it was, I was fortunate to have my Garmin Nuvi with me, which has virtually every highway, street and back alley of the entire country pre-loaded. The majority of my time in the high mountains was a blank screen. Just today, I drove from the front range area to the western slope and back. Routing in these areas is far more important than traffic updates. I can drive for only 30 minutes from my home and be out of range of any cell tower.
